Awful - DO NOT USE OPENTABLE!We booked for a graduation celebration, 6 people, through OpenTable. Reservation confirmed, turned up, restaurant closed on Mondays, so what were OpenTable doing sending us an email to say the reservation was confirmed? Obviously a computer-generated response with no contact at all with the establishment, so what is the point of that? It's worse than useless, as it meant we had wasted £8 on a Uber to a closed restaurant and had to walk half a mile (with 86-year-old grandmother) to find somewhere else. I complained to OpenTable. They offered 1,000 points (about £5) as compensation. When I suggested that the price of a cup of coffee might not be commensurate with the loss, not even covering the travel let alone the ruined celebration, I got an email which started "Hey" (appropriate salutation in the circumstances?) then the wrong name (the name of the colleague I first spoke to). The person then told me the company "feel awful" when these things happen (that helps a lot) but refused to offer anything more than 1,000 points, which of course I won't be using anyway as I will never use this dreadful company again. Book direct with the restaurant, much safer
Opentable is a farcically bad service: (1) you make a reservation, (2) you get bombarded with confirmation emails (3) the restaurant assumes double booking and cancels one of them (4) you assume the reservation is totally cancelled, (5) you check your opentable reservation page where the reservation is gone, (5) you call the restaurant and do not get through (6) you choose a local restaurant because you assume there is no table (7) you get a complaint from the restaurant because you do not arrive. Why do restaurants pay money for such a service which makes both restaurant and customer miserable?
As a wedding present, I received a card from a cousin telling me that I had received a very generous gift to be used through Open Table. The instructions were to just activate the gift card number on-line. So, made a reservation for our first anniversary at Gotham Bar & Grill. Thought this was the perfect use of the gift & was very excited. The night before, went on-line to activate the number. It then told me that it would take 4-6 weeks to mail me an actual credit card with the amount. No amount of phone calls to Open Table got any result. So, no grand anniversary dinner, had to cancel on Gotham last minute, and no one at Open Table would take ownership. We ended up at our favorite local restaurant, Sevilla, incidentally, NOT on Open Table. Shame on you, Open Table!
I have generally had good luck with this site. Make sure you cancel your reservations well in advance though. I canceled one at the last minute and they sent me a message saying there would be some sort of penalty if I did it again. It seemed kind of ridiculous as this would not happen if I just booked directly with the restaurant. However, they do make finding and booking restaurants easier.
I am totally frustrated with this website.I recently made 3 restaurant bookings, I think. I have NOT received any email confirmation, so am not sure. When trying to view my account information to see if these bookings went through, I could not login as I had forgotten my password. I used the 'forgotten password' link to receive an email allowing me to reset my password, but NO EMAIL was received (and yes, I did check in Junk). I tried this several times, but to no avail.I then sent a message via the website, to which I did get an automated response saying someone would get back to me. I am still waiting!
