I got the option of buying it over a year ago with my new laptop, because it came as an extra with my purchase I was happy to pay the small £20 for a year of protection etc. The experience was terrible. I kept getting messages saying my free trial was over and I had no protection until I paid, but I had paid for a year and never signed up for a free trial. I contacted customer support multiple times about this and nothing was permanently corrected, so after paying for a year I ended up spending most of the year without the service. Then this month I had £59.99 taken from my bank account by them for "auto renewel" apparently when you install its automatically set to auto renew after a year without letting you know so you have to manually have to change that if you install Mcafee. Of course I called customer support and asked for a refund which I'm getting but the phone call took so much longer than it should because they were doing everything possible to keep me as a customer after I explained 4 times why I didn't want mcafee and that yes I definitely wanted to cancel and get a refund they finally agreed to it. If they don't want to give out refunds then they should at least send you a reminder before taking payment
