Book directly through the hotel website…

Book directly through the hotel website to ensure the room is actually available. I received an email hours after booking an apartment saying it was double-booked and I would have to wait 7-14 days for money to be refunded. Back to the drawing board to find suitable accommodation. A few weeks later I booked again through this site and AFTER getting booking confirmation from the hotel I received multiple emails from booking.com saying I need to phone the hotel to confirm the booking. Why bother with this site if it only makes things more complicated???
