For me the national trust is a complete rip off. In my younger days we went to mother Shiptons in Knaresborough,york minster,stonehenge,whitby Abbey and all were free! The last time I went to York minster there were turnstiles inside this so called house of god. Quite a few people were milling around before the turnstiles,about twenty of the tourists were chineese who decided not to pay like us and walked out.If you go to Bolton Abbey, as four of us did in one car we paid a fiver, admittedly a few years ago, but in the same we went to fountains Abbey,national trust,and the charge per person was ten pounds so did not go in.
