The latest update pushes Duolingo closer to complete monetisation. That is the end game here I presume. The introduction on hearts was a severe cap on learning. It meant you could not, without spending money, make more than five mistakes (4, if Duolingo decide they want you to watch a video and you decline) in a day. Pay money, get unlimited mistakes. However, at least you were, when you inevitably ran out of hearts, able to go back and practice already completed lessons without exclusion. The recent update has removed this. No hearts, no learning. Only 5… sometimes 4 ... Hearts. Unless, you pay. Doulingo .. free for everybody....up till your fifth mistake then only those who pay us cold hard cash can continue to learn.
