The name Gulf of Mexico has been in use since 1589. That is, over four centuries. The United States and Google cannot arbitrarily change an internationally recognized geographical name. Particularly, since this body of water is tied to Mexico and Cuba. The geographic name Gulf of Mexico is recognized by the United Nations and by the International Hydrographic Organization. The unilateral renaming of the Gulf is disrespectful and will lead to political tensions in th region. Google's renaming of the Gulf of Mexico reflects political coercion and not historical and geographical accuracy. This is an example of a settler-colonial mentality.
