I had a Capital One Savings Now account that I forgot about because I didn’t use it much and had signed up for online account statements. Then, in April 2023, Capital One sent me a final bank statement for that account, saying they had closed the account and sent the account’s funds to the State of Florida’s unclaimed property department. In other words, though Capital One had my current address, they chose not to use it to let me know that they were going to close my account. Or they could have closed the account and send the funds directly to me, given that they had my current address. That was almost a year and a half ago! Not only are those funds not listed on Florida’s unclaimed property website, Florida’s unclaimed property department cannot verify ever having received the funds from Capital One – raising the question of whether Capital One ever did send the funds to that department. Capital One refuses to do anything further to return my funds to me. Beware of my experience, lest you have funds stolen from your account as I did!
