Over 15 years, I have tried just about every other anti-virus system, free and subscribed. Too many of them were bulky, slow, harvested too much information or missed too many things. I recommend Avast because it's lightweight, easy to configure, understandable, updated regularly, and mostly accurate. I started with Avast on my desktop Mac 6 years ago, in spite of the myth that "Macs are bulletproof." They aren't, and Avast caught all sorts of nasty stuff. It was the first thing I installed on my PC laptop. I also run it on my Android phone, and added extensions to all 3 of my browsers. I use it to scan anything I download, install, or plug in to my computer. And about once a week select every possible option, point it at my Mac Time Machine, all 3 of my my external storage devices, and let it run over night. If you want to see a grown man weep, ask anyone who had lost everything because a virus or a Trojan ate his computer.Avast doesn't protect you from your own bad decisions, so things like firewalls, external backups, VPNs and browser guards are essential in today's high-risk climate.
