I'm entirely locked out of my iPad

I'm entirely locked out of my iPad. Apple says that I have to wipe out the entire iPad and lose all the data. Talk about piss poor functionality. Their tech support cannot answer simple questions about why they want me to connect to iTunes and what the end result of their instructions are. They get frustrated because they can't answer questions logically, so they hang up. My best course of action is to throw the expensive iPad in the garbage and never purchase another Apple product again.
